Electrolysis Hair Removal
Electrolysis is the only approved method of permanent hair removal. It works on all hair and skin colours.
Electrolysis works by inserting a small electrical current into the area that needs to be treated. There are three methods of electrolysis: galvanic, diathermy or blend.
Tam or Kerry will give you a thorough consultation to understand the condition you wish to remove and to select the right method of electrolysis for you.

Skin and Hair Colour
Electrolysis can be used on all skin colours and works on all hair colours including white, red and blonde hair that cannot be treated with laser hair removal.
Hyperpigmentation - we will always carry out a patch test in your consultation. If you are concerned about or have existing hyperpigmentation, the patch test will allow us to see how your skin responds to the different electrolysis types.
We have both gold needles and insulated needles available for use on skin which is sensitive or prone to hyperpigmentation.

Electrolysis or laser?
Both laser and electrolysis are very effective for removing superfluous hair. Although they both have their uses, electrolysis is the only proven permanent method of hair removal. Laser hair removal does have its limitations. The laser is attracted to the pigment within the hair, therefore white hair is impossible to treat. Hair growth as a result of a hormonal imbalance is also difficult to treat. The hair density can be reduced greatly with laser but it is often necessary to continue with electrolysis to obtain further results.

How long will the treatment take?
For electrolysis there is no ‘typical’ treatment as all clients have different amounts of hair growth. Each treatment can vary from a short 15 minute appointment up to 2 hours+ depending upon the area being treated. All treatment planning will be discussed on the day of the consultation.
Regardless of the size of area being treated, you will require a course of treatments. How many will vary for each client. Treatment can be from 6 months to 2 years, depending on hair amount and growth.
Electrolysis works by destroying the hair follicle whilst it is in the anagen (active growth) stage. Because we cannot see through the skin, treatments are carried out around every 1- 2 weeks initially to ensure that all hair is treated at some point whilst it is in this growth phase. As the hair growth reduces, treatments can then become more spaced apart.
Electrolysis is permanent, but does require patience and regular sessions to achieve optimum results. Results are progressive.
How to prepare for electrolysis
Prior to your first electrolysis session with us, please book a consultation. This is required even if you have had electrolysis elsewhere. For your consultation and each subsequent treatment session the hair needs to be long enough for us to see the direction of hair growth and remove with tweezers. If the hair is not long enough, we will not be able to carry out the treatment.
During your consultation we will carry out a patch test and work out a treatment plan.
Prior to your patch test and subsequent treatments, in order to make your treatment successful and more comfortable, we recommend:
-
Please avoid using retinol skin care on the area treated as this makes skin more sensitive.
-
DO exfoliate in between treatments (not for at least 48 hours after previous treatment though).
-
DO hydrate, this makes the treatment more comfortable.
-
You may find that taking ibuprofen or paracetamol prior to treatment will increase comfort. You may also apply a topical numbing cream prior to your treatment. Please be aware that we cannot provide or apply these for you.
Hair regrowth management in-between appointments
-
Please DO NOT wax or pluck the hairs. In order for treatment to be successful, the hairs need to be treated whilst in the anagen (active growth) stage. Plucking or waxing in-between treatments will increase the number of sessions needed to permanently remove the hair.
-
Hair can be cut/shaved in-between treatments. Please ensure that on the day of treatment the hair is long enough for us to see and remove with tweezers. We will be unable to carry out treatment if the hair is too short.
